We have all experienced moments where we felt like we were alone and fear and anxiety kicked into high gear, the walls were closing in and our backs felt pressed against the wall. Below are some great reminders of our source when we feel hard-pressed:
Here are some biblical principles to guide you:
1. Trust in God’s Sovereignty: As children of God, we can have faith and trust that He has a purpose and plan for everything that happens in our lives (Romans 8:28). Even in times of difficulty, anxiety, and fear, we must remember that God is still on the throne. He promises to work all things out for the good of those who love Him1
2. Seek God’s Wisdom: Develop a proper fear of God. This involves fixing your heart on Him, trusting in Him, and channeling fear into serving the Lord by faith. The fear of the Lord leads to wisdom and understanding (Psalm 112:1, 7, 8; Matthew 25:14-30).
3. Focus on God’s Promises: Trusting in God’s promises can help us overcome fear and anxiety. Through the Bible, prayer, and other spiritual practices, we can learn to trust God more, gaining confidence and security in our faith.
4. Jesus’ Teaching on Anxiety: In the gospels, Jesus addressed fear, worry, and anxiety. He challenged people to understand the spiritual significance of their anxiety. His questions often exposed the values and thinking causing fear, anxiety, and worry. His goal was to invite trust in Him as the creator and provider of all they truly needed. For instance, in Matthew 6:25, Jesus encourages us not to worry about our lives but to trust God’s provision and care. This teaching on anxiety is an application of verses 19–24, emphasizing the importance of seeking God’s kingdom first and trusting Him for our needs.
Remember that overcoming fear and anxiety is a process. It involves prayer, seeking God’s Word, and relying on His promises. Trusting in God’s character and sovereignty allows us to face our fears with courage and hope.
