If you are like me, I want to know everything, what, why, and when. LOL, we say I do not like surprises, or I am a planner, this is why I need to know everything. Truth is for some of us it is a trust issue. Due to life and past disappointments, it has led me to a point where I could no longer trust what people said; instead, I needed them to show me through their actions. However, this lack of trust caused me to miss valuable opportunities that could have been beneficial. It caused me to dig a little deeper to figure out the root of trust issues. It took some time, and it required me to be intentional. I’ve included below some steps to help rebuild trust and open yourself up to new opportunities:
· Identify the Root Cause – Reflect on past experiences that led to your distrust and acknowledge how they have shaped your mindset.
· Challenge Negative Assumptions – Not everyone will disappoint you. Try to evaluate people and situations based on their individual merits rather than past experiences.
· Take Small Steps – Start by trusting in low-risk situations and gradually build confidence in others.
· Communicate Openly – Express your concerns and expectations in relationships, whether personal or professional. Transparency can help build mutual trust.
· Observe Actions, Not Just Words – While skepticism can be healthy, look for consistent actions over time rather than dismissing opportunities outright.
· Learn from Missed Opportunities – Reflect on what you have lost due to mistrust and use it as motivation to take calculated risks moving forward.
· Practice Forgiveness and Let Go of the Past – Holding on to past disappointments can prevent growth. Work on forgiving yourself and others to move forward.
· Seek Support – Talk to a mentor, friend, or therapist to gain perspective and guidance on rebuilding trust.
Hopefully, you can recognize that we have a role to play in overcoming the mindset that has contributed to our trust issues. As I mentioned, it will take time and requires intentional effort. However, it is achievable—one step at a time. Be intentional!
